"Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place."

happy birthday

Last night I finally got around to commemorating the passing of John Hughes with a screening of my HD-DVD of The Breakfast Club, which I had actually bought in a clearance section for three bucks only a few days ago. I started to organize some of my thoughts on the film, only to realize that I had pretty much already written them when the "High School Reunion" edition was released on DVD. My thoughts on the movie itself haven't changed much since then, although all that time in the library brought back some rather nostalgic memories (my friends and I spend a lot of quality time in our school library instead of in class).

I assume that this master will be used for the Blu-ray release, which is fine because the picture is quite solid, if unremarkable. On the other hand, the additional resolution the high definition format offers allows for some of the more subtle make-up choices made to differentiate the characters from one much another to be much more apparent (while we may all joke about the "Brat Pack," the performances in this film are quite good). The sound was listed as being "Dolby Digital Plus 5.1," but just as with the DVD's DTS track, it is pretty much just a monaural presentation, so don't expect the Simple Minds song to surround you when you play it in any format.

And with the sweeping plaudits gleaned at Cannes Film Festival by both Alien Vs. Predator masterpieces has now inspired a new dovetailing along similar lines: The Evil Breakfast Dead Club. The tagline: "They broke the rules. They touched each other. They swallowed each others souls."

Just about the only thing that could tear me away from the near-obsessive listening of the Retrograde release of James Horner's epic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan score was Bear McCreary's no less epic, albeit very different Battlestar Galactica Season 4. One of the things I love so much about film and television music is following a thematic idea through various permutations that reflect the development of the characters and situations. As a result, I've been listening to much of the previous season compilations as well; one of the few playlists on my iPod consists of all seven Battlestar Galactica albums (as I've previously mentioned, I kept the "Daybreak" disc distinct from the rest of the Season 4 material, and this list also includes Caprica) so that I can easily bounce around the four seasons to find specific tracks for comparison.

One of the most arresting progressions was the love theme for Kara Thrace and Samuel Anders which is first heard in the episode "The Farm" and was featured on the Season 2 as performed by the Supernova String Quartet. This moving piece was dedicated to the recovery of featured violinist Ludvig Girdland, and has been a quietly moving thematic thread throughout the series, usually subtle regardless of how tumultuous the relationship depicted has been. The conclusion of this musical idea is "Goodbye Sam," in which the theme is taken up by a full string orchestra. To make a piece even more moving than "A Promise To Return" is no small task, but the yearning quality of that piece has been replaced by a melancholy sense of acceptance that is extremely poignant.

While many fans commenting on Bear's Battlestar Blog are chomping at the bit to hear him start scoring films, I am wondering if a feature film would offer him the kind of tapestry that he has when working on a weekly series. Few movie series (John Williams' Star Wars, Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings) allow a composer the opportunity to work with a project of this scope.

Yoinked from Arete:

1. You can ONLY answer Yes or No.

2. You are NOT ALLOWED to explain ANYTHING unless someone messages or comments you and asks. And believe me, the temptation to explain some of these will be overwhelming as nothing is exactly as it seems.

Now, here's what you're supposed to do...copy and paste this into your notes, delete my answers, type in your answers and tag as many of your friends as you'd like to.
