...and I can kill you with my brain.

I have gotten my Firefly DVDs back from Tim and am currently going through the commentary tracks. It's interesting how familiar one becomes with certain commentators after spending a few hours with them over time. This is certainly one of the main reasons why Terry Gilliam tends to provide commentary tracks that I like; he has a familiar address, but there is a lot of informatiion being imparted at the same time. It is interesting how Joss Whedon and company's sort of relaxed approaches to these tracks on the latter Buffy and Angel sets and now Firefly just make you want to have been on the set doing this... especially Firefly. It sounds like it was just a big playground.

Also interesting is a comment that Whedon makes at one point, which is that while they ended up butting heads with Fox often over the characterization, storylines, a shuffling broadcast order and even the aspect ratio that the program would be broadcast in, he knew that the definitive form that people watching the series would see is the prospective DVD box set. It is interesting how this format is effecting the creation of art, both with this example and that of the extended versions of Lord of the Rings. The idea that the ultimate purpose for a film or television series will be as its home video format is not new, it certainly effected how cinematographers and directors composed shots in widescreen in the eighties, and even altered the formats used for principle photography. However, the DVD really does seem to be a perfect medium for long-form storytelling.

Waiting for the Sun

Time waits for no man, and it certainly didn't wait for me. It turns out that the deadline for application for June graduation was March 1. I took today off from work to find out whether or not I can squeeze in my application. It may be possible, as I applied for graduation last semester. All of that information should still be in my file, so none of the research that had to be done last semester needs to be repeated. I submitted my request with my phone number and pager, and am hoping against hope that I can get in there.

It's not the end of the world if I don't (I mean, I can always just make my submission for September graduation), but I really do want to get this behind me. Furthermore, I would like, if at all possible, to get this done as soon as possible because I want my grandfather to be able to see it (I left out that last part in my application, because I think it sounds like bullshit even though it's not).

On the brighter side, The Incredibles is released tomorrow on DVD. I have seen the disc, and it looked... uh... supergreat (bet you thought I was going to say "Incredible," didn't you? Well that'll show you!). I strongly urge anyone who missed this while it was in theaters to give this one a rental. It's one of the best straight-up adventure films in many years. The animation is glorious, the characters are great, the music is swanky, the voice talent is dead-on... it really is a tour de force, and if Cars sucks (which it looks like it might), it's a still a great "fuck you" to Disney as Pixar goes on its way (unfortunately leaving the sequel rights for Toy Story behind, I understand... ugh).

The Monk

You scored 15% Cardinal, 51% Monk, 50% Lady, and 45% Knight!
You live a peaceful, quiet life. Very little danger comes you way and you live a long time. You are wise and modest, but also stagnant. You have little comfort, little food and have taken a vow of silence. But who needs chatter when just sitting in the cloister of your abbey with The Good Book makes you perfectly content.

My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender
:

You scored higher than 8%
on Cardinal

You scored higher than 68%
on Monk

You scored higher than 79%
on Lady

You scored higher than 44%
on Knight
