This Lord of the Rings mix is turning out to be a very interesting project... I've gotten a lot done that I've wanted to for quite some time... but I'm not sure I'll be able to fit everything onto two discs. Three discs is sort of a magic number though, so...

How strange does a 3 CD "Lord of the Rings" mix sound if the discs don't correspond to the films?

It sounds strange. You should either stick to two or confine each platter to one film.
It does sound a bit strange, but I think you should stick with the formula you've been working on all this time.
It doesn't sound that strange, if you think you need an extra disc, go for it.
The scores are really part of one unbroken creative process, so there is no reason why you shouldn't mix them all up in your mix.
