Riding As One!

I've been listening to Vistas today (of course). I found myself surprised at how aggressive the final product is. I was expecting it to be more exotic as well. What's odd about these surprises is that I used pretty much everything I had thought to put on it. The disc came together very quickly, in a sense it seemed to program itself. That the finished work doesn't sound like what I was expecting it to doesn't bother me because I am extremely pleased with what it does sound like. It is strange because I feel that I accomplished what I set out to accomplish, but what I thought I was doing wasn't what ended up happening. So you could say that this one works in spite of me.

"All creatures shall make merry under pain of death."

The inclusion of an orchestral track from Flash Gordon amuses me; Howard Blake's music for this movie is both funny and beautiful. I must say that as ludicrous as that film is, Max Von Sydow's turn as Ming the Merciless was priceless. Not only does he look perfect, but you can tell that he's really having a good time playing that role. Forget The Seventh Seal, Virgin Spring, Snow Falling on Cedars, this may have been the part Sydow was born to play. Okay, not really. But he's great in this so dumb but so kinky movie.

I don't really know what to say about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I really liked it. It is a very accurate adaptation of the book, and details I had forgotten came back to me in a rush while I watched the film. I have to say, however, that my appreciation of the film is steeped in my own personal nostalgia, as I read the Narnia books many, many times as a child (my favorite was The Voyage of the Dawn Treader). I read an interview with director Andrew (Shrek) Adamson in which he stated that his intention was not so much to adapt the book itself, but more his memory of the book. Well, he may as well have adapted my memory of the book, because that's about the size of it.

The film is not flawless, of course. While Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes are fine as Lucy and Edmund, William Moseley's Peter is bland and Anna Popplewell's Susan is just kind of there. However, Tilda Swinton needs special props for her icy portrayal of the White Witch (I wonder if she'll be returning for the film of The Magician's Nephew). She makes an impressive villain. The voice talent for the talking animals is spearheaded by a great turn from Sexy Beast's Ray Winstone and Dawn French (the fat lady in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) as Mr. and Mrs. Beaver. I didn't know who was going to voice Aslan, but I instantly recognized the actor's voice and must admit that it was a perfect choice. And that's Rupert Everett as Fox, too.

James McAvoy is wonderful as Mr. Tumnus. It was interesting to hear the audience's reaction to this scene, however. Children are so conditioned to be wary of strangers (rightfully so, of course), that the scene between Lucy and Tumnus was very uncomfortable for them. The film handles it as well as it can, and McAvoy is as good as can be, but there is no way around the fact that aspect of the story is disturbing. It is also strange to see a teenager leading an army, another thing taken directly from the book that doesn't look as good as it reads... but Peter's tactics are a well reasoned extension of his experiences (this is something that the book glosses over), and the battle sequences are well rendered.

Harry Gregson-Williams score is okay. The orchestral material is decent enough, but it's marred by a new agey sound that just doesn't blend well with the score or the film either. It has a tendency to emphasize the weaker elements of the film and sound very anachronistic. It is much better than the usual Media Ventures alumni drivel, and there are some musical ideas in the score that might have been more interesting to explore than the cheesy synth stuff. The pop song that closes the film is similarly out-of-place.

Overall, I think that this is probably the best way to make a film out of C.S. Lewis' book. If they had strayed too far from the source material, I think that it would have only have messed the movie up.

Raz didn't like it.
