'They have a cave troll!'

I had an interesting set of jobs in my work today. They were "IYS" tickets; facilities roll-overs where we didn't have any contact or billing information for the end user anymore. This happens with wholesale circuits; that is to say that the T-1s are provided by AT+T or Nextlink or some such similar exchange carrier, but they use our fiber and copper to get to the end user's premises. However, sometimes the exchange carrier (who is our customer) doesn't keep us updated with the end user information.

In this case, they were three T-1s in a particular building (417 5th Avenue, if you're wondering) that were being moved off of an old P.O.S. mux (fiber multiplexers that turn the light signal into an electrical one that we can run on copper within the building) and onto a new one. And when I say that old mux was a P.O.S., I mean that it is a P.O.W.F.S. Believe me.

My job was to "survey," which is to go to the customer, confirm they still have the circuits and get good contact information so that we could schedule the roll-overs. One of the circuits belonged to a tenant who had moved out several months before (so who was paying the bill?), another was for a brokerage house that was using the circuit and needed it moved after hours, and the last was a cell site that in a cage that I didn't have access to. The brokerage firm was easily handled because there were people there; I talked to the IT guys, got the name, number and hours that the system administrator would be in and that was it. The cell site was also easy, I just copied down the "For service call..." number on the cage and passed all the information on to the tester.* And, of course, the one where the tenant had moved out was the easiest of all...

It makes perfect sense to send a field tech out to do them; we're already out in the field and we're familiar with the process and can explain it more practically to the end user than anybody who normally sits in an office can. Usually this sort of thing is conducted on the phone by the engineers, but that wasn't possible with these three circuits.

It was very interesting to have these jobs that were so different from what I normally do.

* Yes, yes, for service call Ada Gronick, etc. etc...
