If there is no music in Heaven, I shall not go! (apologies to Mark Twain)

Yoinked from melancthe and suitboyskin:

Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than 50 icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, and what significance it has.

  1. Conan the King (Conan the Barbarian)
"...destined to bear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow..."
This is my default picture because Conan the Barbarian is one of those cases where the fusion of music with images is irresistable to me. Basil Poledouris' brilliant score blends perfectly with the film's grisly straightforwardness. I chose the image of Conan on the throne because in addition to the fact that it places a strong mythic dimension to the film, it is also one cool image. I tend to use it in comments more than posts, often to denote something more introspective. Or as a response to somebody with another Conan icon.

  2. Burton (Mountains of the Moon)
    "Damn fool, the Devil drives..."
Sir Richard Francis Burton is a historical figure who fascinates me. I first got interested in him because he was the protagonist of several of Philip José Farmer's Riverworld novels, but I found that the actual man was even more interesting. This is the poster art from a fascinating film called Mountains of the Moon about his journey with John Hannings Speke into Africa to find the source of the Nile. The scene in the film involves an ailing Burton euphoric over the discovery of Lake Tanganyika. I use the image in a much more literal sense, that is to say when I'm particularly happy about something.

  3. Rube (Dead Like Me)
"Bacchus. He was the Greek god of 'why don't you read a fucking book?'"
aerolyndt first introduced me to Dead Like Me on my trip to California a few years ago (see The Adventures of the Swashbuckler on the West Coast for more details). suitboyskin, however, was instrumental in getting me to actually sit and watch the series, and I enjoyed its twisted humor and bittersweet observations very much. I also really enjoyed the balance between warmth and sternness that Rube presented, and it is those elements of the character that motivate my use of this icon.

  4. Kambei (The Seven Samurai)
"Danger always strikes when everything seems fine."
One of the greatest characters from one of the greatest movies ever made, bridging 'street smarts' with a greater discipline. 'Nuff said.

  5. Tom (The Godfather)
"You mean is he Sicilian? Fahgetaboutit."
Speaking of some of the greatest movies ever made, I created a Tom Hagen icon because I couldn't imagine not having one for posts about The Godfather. It's pretty specific, so I don't use it often out of that context, although sometimes I do for posts about something related (gangster movies, other Coppola films, etc.). The quoted line is not from either the theatrical or expanded versions, but rather from one of the deleted scenes in the DVD box set. I just got such a kick out of hearing Bobby Duvall say "Fahgetaboutit."

  6. Buddy (Six-String Samurai)
"Cross that line, kid, I'll cut your little teddy bear in half."
Ha! I was just explaining this one to dotificus! This is Buddy Holly from the post-apocalypse/rock mythology/Wizard of Oz mishmash Six-String Samurai. The movie is such a non-sequiter that of course it appealed to me, and I often fall back on this icon as one that isn't too commital.

  7. Don't Panic
    "Space is really big."
Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the book where the entire universe just 'clicked' for me. The humor and the inclinations - Adams coined the term I usually apply to myself, "Radical Atheist" - both were perfectly geared towards me. It is strange pointing at a couple of comedy books and a wacky radio show as being so tied into my worldview, but the truth is that the humor allowed me to put the philosophical revelations into a perspective that many who come to these conclusions can't, which is why nihilism is often equated with fatalism. I use this icon for both philosophical and humorous postings. After all, Douglas Adams proved to me that philosophy and humor are one and the same. ;)

  8. Stryker (X-Men)
"If there's one thing I know more than anyone else, it's my own work. Seal the room. Shoot it."
This icon was created by melancthe, who bequeathed it to me that I might have both an X2 icon (up until that point I had been using my Fenster icon for anything dealing with a Bryan Singer film) and because suitboyskin had been saying that I needed more alignment evil characters in my... er... iconicon?

  9. Dude (The Big Lebowski)
"I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber."
As suitboyskin did when he took this meme, I am breaking with the strict count to present this icon, which is one of the duelling icons I have with him. He has a Walter and I have a Dude. In addition to being a fairly accurate paradigm for the two of us, it is also a tribute to my affection for the work of the Joel and Ethan Coen. The Dude may in fact be one of the few characters in their oevre that I wouldn't mind trading places with for a few days. Not the days depicted in the movie, mind you. But you gotta respect a guy who knows how to take it easy.

  10. Tuco (The Good the Bad & the Ugly)
"When that rope starts to pull tight, you can feel the Devil bite your ass."
I'm including this description because this is the icon I'm using to post this entry with. I am a big Sergio Leone fan, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was the movie that introduced me to his work. Tuco is a perfect example of how the Spaghetti Westerns revamped the traditional genre conventions, and I think Eli Wallach's performance is one of his best (Henry Fonda, when contacted about the possibility of appearing in Once Upon a Time in the West, called up Wallach to ask him if he should do it; Wallach told him that it would be one of the best experiences of his career, and the rest is cinema history). I use this icon in connection to posts about Leone or Ennio Morricone, but also to illustrate the feeling of being in a tight spot... usually ironically, though, as it's use here is.

  11. My userpics can be found here, if you have any questions about any of the others. An admission: I started doing the "every seven" as I have fifty icons, but realized that one of them was one that I felt I need to remove. I formerly had an image of Mad Max from The Road Warrior, which I formerly used in posts related to driving. I removed that as I don't think I particularly care to have a Mel Gibson icon, as awesome a movie as The Road Warrior is, bringing me down to forty-nine. So technically, I should have picked every fifth one, but I was pretty far down on the list by the time I realized that I didn't quite fit into the demographic whose math I was using. But I did add two extra ones there at the end, hopefully that will make up for my faux pas.

    Finish the sentence:

    1. I've come to realize that my ex...
      Was a psycho hose beast?

    2. I am listening to...
Skipping about the iAudio... a bit of John Williams here, some Iggy Pop there, some Miles Davis...

    3. I love...
My iAudio X5! It's awesome that I can burn CDs directly off of it, and it sounds fantastic!

    4. My best friend(S)...
Know I'm a bit strange, but leave me to it.

    5. I dont understand...
      Quadratic equations.

    6. I lost...
My CD of Michael Nyman Live. I know it'll turn up eventually, but I want to listen to "The Upside-Down Violin" now!

    7. Most People...
Seem to be pretty stupid. Luckily, I have an enormous set of headphones so I don't have to listen to them! :)

    8. The meaning of my display name is...
"Swashbuckler" a nickname that I got at Tower because I had fenced in high school. The "332" was my old Boy Scout Troop number, therefore not one I am likely to forget.

    9. Love is...
      Somewhere... hopefully close.

    10. Somewhere, someone is...
Watching an alien dissection video. I don't know why that popped into my head. Maybe because I'd been discussing how hilarious Scientology is with waystone and suitboyskin recently.

    11. I will always...
Find something to enjoy about life even in the bleakest moments. Not that I'm ever happy about the bleak moments, mind you, but as long as there's a movie to watch, a book to read, some music to listen to, eventually I'll get over whatever it is. Thank goodness I'm not dealing with one of those bleak moments now.

    12. Angels are...
      People who finance plays. Why?

    13. I never want to...
Work as a security guard again. Seriously, one of the worst jobs imaginable.

    14. My mobile phone is...
A piece of crap, it seems. I've been getting a lot of breaking up and dropped calls lately, more than I ever had before.

    15. When I woke up this morning...
I accidentally hit the button that resets the snooze, but woke up only a few minutes later anyway. This is very rare.

    16. I get annoyed when....
People discuss Astrology. It makes me think they need a lobotomy. And gives me the urge to try my hand at neurosurgery. Of course, without the precision tools neurosurgeons use, I would be forced to rely on my work tools.

    17. I am thinking about...
Lunch. I'm hungry. What do I want?

    18. My friends are...
Was that a question or a statement?

    19. Last night I...
Read a bit, posted the entry for my new mix (and found myself locked out of LJ for a bit) and had a fascinating conversation with suitboyskin that unfortunately dropped off a little too quickly as I was getting rather tired.

    20. Today I...
      Am 32.

    21. Tonight I will...
Head out to my parents' house for a little spongecake, und a little wine, und... POP ein shit!!!*

    22. It would be nice...
To have more music from Superman Returns as well as any from Superman IV so that I could make this Superman mix that I've been dying to, damnit...

    23. I really want...
At the moment, lunch is pretty high on that list. Although I could think of a few CDs and DVDs I could mention...

    24. The person most likely to do this is...
Not sure. suitboyskin is a meme whore like me, he'll probably do it. Hopefully melancthe will... I dunno. If you're reading this and it strikes your fancy, do it.
