Almost missed it...

I was extremely pleased that I was able to snag the Varése Club release of The Birdman of Alcatraz. I had caught up to the film a few months ago and was taken both by Burt Lancaster's committed performance and Elmer Bernstein's evocative score. I had been looking for the LP of the score since, so this release is quite attractive. These past few years have been a hell of a renaissance for Bernstein fans...

Varése and Screen Archives sold out so quickly that I didn't even have a chance to go for Runaway. Now, to be honest, I can live without Runaway; I've often felt that Jerry Goldsmith went a little overboard with the electronics in many of his 80s scores. Some were successful, such as Legend, others less so. Runaway has an interesting theme in it, but I've always found the all synth articulations to have been grating. Nevertheless, while I don't really mind so much missing out this selection, it would have been nice to have the choice.
