Sibling Rivalry

The comedy team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker completely redefined the concept of a spoof with Kentucky Fried Movie, Airplane and Top Secret. Over time, however, each started concentrating on different projects. David Zucker began helming The Naked Gun films while Jim Abrahams worked on the Hot Shots! movies. Jerry Zucker, on the other hand, tried his hand at making more serious films. The result was the enormously successful Ghost and the abysmal First Knight (Doug Pratt's comment that he used to make fun of films like this one rings quite true¹), after which Jerry returned to comedy with Rat Race.

The love scene from Ghost became instantly iconic, and also brought the Righteous Brothers' recording of "Unchained Melody" - lyrics by Hy Zaret applied to the main theme from the film Unchained, scored by Alex North - back to the top of the charts. There was also a brief upsurge in enrollments to pottery classes in schools.

EROTIC, BUT WORK SAFE

Of course, Jerry's brother David couldn't let him get away with that, and so for the trailer of The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, he recreated the scene but with an arched eyebrow, not to mention a more realistic look at how the clay would behave if the wheel was left spinning. The film was accurately promoted as being "From the brother of the director of Ghost!" Audiences responded so well to the trailer that the scene was then included in the film.

HYSTERICAL, KINDA WORK SAFE

On a more personal note, my mother was pregnant with Zach when my stepdad and her had rented this film, and was laughing so hard at the "Ebb Tide" part of the sequence that her water broke.

¹ Though it admittedly featured a great score by Jerry Goldsmith
