I have been able to sample both high def formats at their full visual capacity, and, while it is difficult to be completely definitive without comparing two discs created from the same master, it would appear that Blu-ray offers a noticeably better picture than HD-DVD. It now appears that the HD-DVD format is hanging on by a thread, so if everything does go Blu-ray, it may have been a case where the right format won (albeit for the wrong reasons). We'll see; some of the companies backing HD-DVD have been known to be pretty stubborn, and I am of the belief that whichever format does win, it will ultimately be a niche market item.
Both of them sound comparably fantastic, as the default Dolby Digital bit rates used are higher than the DVD standard, and HD-DVD often offers Dolby True-HD (Meridian lossless compression) while Blu-ray often features an uncompressed PCM 5.1 soundtrack. I have yet to come across any discs offering 7.1, which my amp does support, as up until now my two rear back speakers have only seen their best use in DTS-ES discrete 6.1 tracks (Lord of the Rings EEs, for example). By a strange quirk of compatibility, while my television set can not offer me the full benefit of the video of the high def player, my amp, which is much older, was perfectly ready for most of it (though not Dolby True HD multichannel for some reason).
But right now, let me regale you with example of a well executed fight scene, from the gravitas the actors give their roles, to the way their detailed environment informs the combat... and, of course, powerful scoring:
