Rudderless Brudders...

Young Frankenstein has been announced for Blu-ray with a release date of October 7th! As if that wasn't good enough by itself, along with a "Transylvanian Lullaby: The Music of John Morris" featurette, there will be isolated score track!!! This is one of the underappreciated Morris' best, and unfortunately the Young Frankenstein album was one of those dialogue soundtracks that the video explosion has now rendered obsolete, so this is marvelous news!

I'm also pleased to see that the original monaural sound mix has been preserved as an audio option.

An old friend from high school e-mailed me yesterday asking when we could hang out, then informed me that she was going to a party that night and wanted to know if I could come. I felt that fun, human contact and booze was a very good idea as I was in a foul mood, and so I met her for dinner and then we went to the party. It ended up getting pretty late (see the surveys below), so I am quite drowsy today.

However, my friend also has a brother who is much younger; hers is now fourteen, while mine is sixteen. She is currently lamenting the fact that he is starting to act like the stereotypical teenager, disassociating from family and authority figures. I could relate; Zach was hell on wheels from thirteen to fifteen, not only getting himself into as much trouble as he possibly could, but being extremely difficult to communicate with.

Happily, this has mostly passed. I'm not saying that life with Zach the sixteen-year-old is a completely serene experience, but he has gotten past the need to stake out his individuality and is now concentrating on what he is interested in. My mother actually said that a conversation I had with him about choosing his battles was key to a much more peaceful household: I asked him why he was bothering to argue with his father about things he knows his father is clearly wrong about if they don't make a practical difference.

My brother is now not only quite technically proficient, but is extremely savvy about the shopping as well. He is a crack negotiator/haggler, and is adept at finding good deals. He had indispensable advice with respect to purchasing my new camera, and he applies himself to both school and his summer job.

More importantly, now that he is no longer trying to prove anything, it is easier to recognize that great kid I knew before puberty turned him into a standoffish bastard for three years. It is really something to see him coming into his own the way he is now.

And so, hearing my friend is currently embarking on the journey that I just finished, all I could do was shake my head and say, "Well... he's fourteen."

Here are some surveys:
  1. Who was your FIRST prom date?
I never went to any proms.

  2. What was your FIRST alcoholic drink and who were you with?
Not counting the obligatory Passover wine, that would have been when jailnurse and I raided his father's liquor cabinet and tried the 190 proof Everclear. This is not a recommended course of action. Charlie didn't even drink it, he used it to clean the heads in his tape deck. I'm serious.

  3. What was your FIRST job?
I worked at a deli on Horace Harding for a few months.

  4. Who was the FIRST person to text you today?

  5. Who is the FIRST person you thought of this morning?
First real person would have been waystone, because I saw the news of the tornado in her neck of the woods. The first person at all was Mayor Richard Wilkins because of school_is_hell.

  6. Where did you go on your FIRST ride on an airplane?
I was maybe three when I went with my parents down to Florida. According to my mother, I was worried that we might break the stars.

I'm not sure what this question is asking, but if it is when was the first that I went to, I don't recall. If it is the first that I was in the wedding party for, that would have been jailnurse's.

  10. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning?
You want me to describe it?

  11. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to?
    U2 at the Meadowlands.

Not that I'm aware of. Is he Jewish?

  36. Would you ever forgive someone if they cheated on you?
No. Trust is important to me.

  39. Last person who told you things were going to be okay?

  67. Do you regret anything?
Not really. There are some things that bother me, but nothing I really regret at present.
