"Ninety years ago I was a freak. Today I'm an amateur."

Film Score Monthly has at last announced their long-awaited release of the original film tracks from Time After Time! The previous LP and CD release of was an excellent re-recording with the Royal Philharmonic, but the original film recording had a larger orchestra and will have much better sound. Miklós Rózsa has long been one of my favorites, and this happened to be one of the scores that really turned me on to his work.

Ironically, director Nicholas Meyer specifically selected Dr. Rózsa to score the film because he wanted an anachronistic sound, but by the time the film was completed and released in 1979, the symphonic motion picture score was back in vogue. Nevertheless, Rózsa's distinctive style gave the film a unique flavor, perfectly dovetailing with Malcolm MacDowell's amiable performance as H.G. Wells.

...time travel mix...?

All these long years I've been analyzing how people react to movies. I have compiled the following only slightly tongue-in-cheek list that gives you the basics of their critical acumen of people I know:

  • ANDREA: "I didn't see it."

  • ART: "It was... okay."

  • CHARLIE: "There weren't enough titties!"

  • CHRISTY: "The score was by one of my favorite composers!"

  • DAN: "That movie sucked!" (he hasn't seen it)

  • DRE: "The bootleg I bought in the subway is a pretty good copy." (it isn't)

  • ERIC: "The wife and I watched it last night after we put the kids to bed and enjoyed it."

  • JASON: "The film was designed to evoke the era in which it was set, and to that end it works beautifully.

  • JEN: "It was good, but it would have been better if Sting had done the end title song."

  • LENNY: "That movie kicked ass!"

  • NAOMI: "I would hate to think of what a sensitive child might come away from this movie feeling!"

  • NATE: "It was okay, but it was no Anchorman."

  • PATSY: "The book was better."

  • RAZ: "It was one of the best movies ever" or "One of the worst movies I've ever seen." (either one)

  • RUSS: "The movie was tremendous!"

  • RYAN: "I found the psychological underpinnings of the characters to have been slightly flawed but interesting."

  • SAADIA: "I didn't like it. It had white people in it."

  • SANDY: "I think the director was trying too hard to be like Godard."

  • SARA: "I'm going to write an extremely long and emotionally charged blog essay about it."

  • TIM: "I liked how the New Testament structure gives way to more ancient mythic forms."

  • TYRONE: "That shit was off the hook!"

Yes, FSM just announced Miklós Rózsa's Time After Time score!!!

No, which is actually surprising if you stop to think about it.

    Most likely.

  69. What do you currently hear?
I have Elmer Bernstein's Ghostbusters theme running through my head.

  70. Do you consider yourself lucky?
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
Actually, I don't believe in luck.

  71. Have you ever found yourself worrying about commitment?
Not really; I tend to invest myself fully in relationships, for good or ill.
