Happy Mothers' Day to all of you mothers out there.

This has something of a trying Mothers' Day for me, but I am keeping my head up as always. Luckily, I've had some chuckles today…

Special Features: Trek Yourself

You know, I wasn't all that jazzed by any of the trailers for the new Star Trek. What really got me into the theater on Thursday evening was the Blu-ray set of the season one. Several things struck me about it:
  • William Shatner isn't that bad when he's not over-emoting, and that didn't really start invading good episodes until season two (well, there's "The Enemy Within," but I digress).

  • While there are indeed some extremely dated aspects about the show, on the whole most of the first season episodes are quite well written and hold up rather well. Art came by to watch The Hunt for Red October last week, and because he was interested in seeing how good the Blu-rays look, we watched "Balance of Terror" afterward, and he was suitably impressed.

  • Anybody bitching about the Spock/Uhura thing only need be referred to "The Man Trap" and "Charlie X" for some canon chemistry, thank you very much.

  • It would have been nice if they had placed the episodes in production order this time out rather than how they were broadcast, as the season watched end to end goes a bit more smoothly if viewed in the order seen in Allan Asherman's The Star Trek Compendium (although I must admit I haven't done this since I was a teenager).

  • I watched "The Menagerie" and was struck by how much closer the format of the show is in "The Cage" to The Next Generation than it was to the series that followed in the wake of "Where No Man Has Gone Before."
Okay… off to see Star Trek again because it was just that much fun.
